Korosten is a small town situated on the banks of river Uzh (“Uzh” is a Water Snake, the river is flexuous like a water snake) in 150 km from the capital of Ukraine, Kiev. The exact date of the town founding is unknown, but archeologists determine that Korosten is more than 1300 years old! The population now is about 66 thousand people and life here comes quiet and measured.
But 1000 years ago here was an ancient Iskorosten, the capital of powerful Drevlian tribe according the chronicles. This tribe was called so because they lived "among trees" (drevo-"tree") so their land was completely covered by forests. In 9th century Drevlians tribe was included into Kievan Rus. In spite of obeying to Kiev, insurrections raised here time to time.
In the year 945, Igor the prince of Kievan Rus customarily went over the Slavic tribes, submitted to him, gathering for annual tributes. That time it was the turn to Drevlians. Iskorosten was formidable fort and the Prince Mal ruled here. That year Kiev’s prince Igor unfortunately was trying to gather double size tribute so Drevlians decided to kill him. Prince Igor was captured and tied to the two bended down birches, which tore him to peaces.
After that Drevlians' chief prince Mal even was going to marry legendary Kiev’s princess dowager Olga. But Olga enjoyed his confidence and deceived him. She came to Drevians forests with army to revenge for her husband Igor’s death. But she could not defeat Drevlians for many months. And according to the legends she overcame them only with an artifice. She said that she would leave them and only asked for a “light” tribute – two birds from each house. Drevlians gave her this tribute and her warriors tied cinder pieces to the bird’s tails and let them go. And as you know birds always come back to their nests… Iskorosten was burned out with all its inhabitants together with Prince Mal.
Those who had survived in forests and had not been sold into slavery leaved the site of fire and founded new town near that place. Now townsmen talk that archeologists have founded huge layer of ash on the area where the ancient Iskorosten has been placed.
Then Iskorosten became a small fortress, defended from Tatar raids. It was destroyed in 1240 by Mongols. After that it belonged to Lithuania, Poland and finally was included into Russia Empire and then to USSR renamed Korosten.
In the beginning of XX c. railway Kiev-Kovel and the famous abroad “Korosten Porcelain” factory were built here. By the way, the factory is functioning nowadays and you can order exclusively painted custom porcelain dishware there.
Korosten became an important strategic junction depot with the building of railway. Here in 1935-1939 years in the center of town utilizing natural and ancient
Drevlians caves the absolutely secret control center “Rock” was built.
“Rock” is a unique object the only active one in Ukraine. This control center is protected from the air attack with the 1.5 meter ferroconcrete walls, 18 meters granite massif and 20 meter layer of argillo-arenaceous ground. It is equipped with the 1.5 and 3 tons doors, entry degassing rooms, has its own source of drinkable water, energy generators, air filters and other systems of life support. All metal constructions are made from the tanks production steel. With all this the control center was invulnerable from the weapon used during the II World War and even from the nuclear attack.
“Rock” has three levels inside. Two of them are closed from visitors, but one is available for excursions. This level consists of the 156 meters corridor and 28 rooms are placed on its sides. The museum of civil defense is situated there now and you can see and familiarize with many artifacts of The II World War.
Korosten suffered during the war and was almost completely destroyed again. So many fierce battles had been there, that the population of the town reduced 14 times!
The town is still alive in spite of its dramatic history events.
